A Silicone Oil-Free Syringe Tailored for Intravitreal Injection of Biologics

Intravitreal injections (IVI) of biologics targeting vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) led to a paradigm shift in the management and prognosis prevalent retinal conditions. Yet, IVI are typically performed with syringes that neither developed nor approved for this purpose. Notably, lubricated silicone oil (SiO) extensively used despite multiple reports showing such can cause deposition SiO droplets vitreous body patient discomfort. Thus, there is need SiO-free substitutes specifically tailored IVI. Here, we report on development testing syringe. This syringe has no dead volume, its design allows high-accuracy dosing. Also, it permits pharmaceutical compounding storage bevacizumab, ranibizumab, aflibercept up 30 days without compromising their functional binding or transport properties.
